Zellige Kitchen Backsplash in Arvada
About This Project
This Arvada kitchen backsplash used glossy white zellige tile installed in a vertical stack pattern from counter to cabinet. Zellige is a handmade Moroccan tile with natural variation in thickness and surface texture, which gives it a distinctive reflective quality but requires more careful installation than machine-made tile. Each tile was individually adjusted in the mortar bed to keep the face plane consistent despite thickness variations of up to 3mm between pieces. The vertical orientation was chosen to add visual height to a kitchen with standard 8-foot ceilings.
What We Did
- Prepped drywall surface and applied a skim coat to ensure flatness
- Established a level first course at counter height with a caulk joint below
- Set each zellige tile individually, adjusting mortar depth per piece to maintain face plane
- Grouted with unsanded white grout; caulked counter-to-tile joint
