Slate Shower Build in an Arvada Ranch Home
About This Project
This bathroom in an Arvada ranch home was gutted and retiled with dark slate, chosen to complement the exposed wood ceiling beams that the homeowner wanted to keep. Slate is a natural stone that requires sealing before grouting to prevent the porous surface from absorbing grout color. The walls and shower surround were tiled in a staggered pattern that works with the natural cleft texture of the slate rather than trying to force it into a rigid grid. A dark charcoal grout was selected to minimize contrast with the tile and let the stone read as a continuous surface.
What We Did
- Demolished existing tub surround and wall tile; assessed framing and substrate
- Installed cement backer board with waterproofing membrane on all wet surfaces
- Set slate tile in staggered pattern; sealed stone before grouting
- Applied charcoal sanded grout; caulked all movement joints
