Checkerboard Floor Tile in a 1940s Sunnyside Kitchen
About This Project
This Sunnyside kitchen in Northwest Denver was a period restoration project. The homeowner wanted a checkerboard floor that suited the 1940s character of the house and complemented their restored Wedgewood range and white subway wall tile. The floor used 12x12 blue-gray and white ceramic tiles in a diagonal checkerboard pattern, which required the layout to be set at 45 degrees to the room. Diagonal layouts require more cuts at the perimeter and careful planning to ensure the pattern reads symmetrically from the main entry point into the kitchen. The wood subfloor was reinforced with additional fasteners and a cement backer board layer before tile was set.
What We Did
- Reinforced wood subfloor and installed cement backer board
- Established 45-degree diagonal layout centered on kitchen entry point
- Cut perimeter tiles to fit diagonal pattern at walls and cabinets
- Grouted with gray grout that reads as a neutral between the two tile colors
