White Subway Backsplash in a Berkeley Neighborhood Kitchen
About This Project
This Berkeley neighborhood kitchen in Northwest Denver used classic white subway tile in a running bond pattern to complement the homeowner's teal painted cabinets and open oak shelving. The backsplash runs from counter to underside of the upper cabinets and continues behind the open shelf section where the wall is fully exposed. Subway tile in a running bond pattern requires careful layout to ensure the offset joints remain consistent, particularly at inside corners where the two walls meet. The counter-to-tile joint was caulked rather than grouted to accommodate the slight movement that happens at that transition in Denver's climate.
What We Did
- Prepared wall surface and established a level first course at counter height
- Set subway tile in running bond with consistent 1/3 offset
- Cut tiles precisely around outlets and open shelf brackets
- Grouted with white unsanded grout; caulked counter-to-tile joint
