Terracotta Tile Bathroom in a Wheat Ridge Bungalow
About This Project
This Wheat Ridge bungalow bathroom renovation used terracotta-colored square tile on the walls, chosen to complement the homeowner's ornate iron sink stand and brass fixtures. The terracotta tile has a slightly irregular surface that reads as handmade, which suited the character of the 1940s bungalow. Terracotta and similar unglazed or lightly glazed tiles need sealing before and after grouting to prevent absorption. The decorative border tile running vertically was planned during layout to fall at a consistent distance from the corner, giving the wall a structured but not rigid look.
What We Did
- Removed original plaster and installed cement backer board
- Planned layout to center decorative border strip on the vanity wall
- Applied penetrating sealer to terracotta tile before setting
- Set tile and border; grouted with earth-tone sanded grout; sealed finished surface
